Food is love & life

To me food is the lifebone of everything - not just for the obvious fact that we need it to live; but food is love, life, culture, survival, health, comfort and history - world history, family history and personal history.

I love that we each have a unique food identiy, our go-to dishes and flavours that we've picked up on our journey of life. What we create in the kitchen is influenced by our childhood, our ancestors, our lovers, our friends, where we've lived, who we've lived with, where we've worked, and where we've travelled. It's exciting to me because our relationship with food is adabtable and expandable throughout our whole lifetime, and is something we can tangibally share with others. Like music memories, I have so many taste and smell memories - foods and flavours that timestamp a specific place, person or phase of my life. Food is magical!

I'm lucky enough to be able to experiment with ingredients now, but life was not always like this for me. During my childhood my superhero mum worked her proverbial balls off to make ends meet as a single parent. She didn't have a lot of time or money but we still ate nutritious home-cooked food. I recall feeling envious of my better-off friends being treated to Friday night takeaways, ready meals and processed branded food. In hindsight I'm glad we had it tough for a while- it came naturally to my mum to be resourceful with whole foods as she had been taught by her mother (who had lived through war-time), and this taught me so much without me even realising it at the time. I'm sure my childhood experiences have influenced my relationship with food and my passion for experimenting and inventing.

Food as a gift of love

I see giving food as a gift of love, and making nourishing food for yourself is self-love and care! Food can connect people from all walks of life, and the act of giving and sharing food can nourish both body and soul. Food has certainly been received as a gift of love over my life time. I hope I can continue that in my own way by sharing my recipe journey and offering inspiration to make food at home, generally using healthy, plant-rich ingredients.

I'm aware there are so many people struggling now, and with a big family I always need to be conscious of cost. I include a Budget category that I'm building to give healthy recipe ideas that shouldn't cost a fortune. It's not always easy - we're confronted by tempting, cheap, poor quality ready-made food all too often, but I believe it's possible to eat nourishing food on a budget by home cooking. It's important to be mindful of ingredients that can be used across dishes and store any leftovers so that that nothing goes to waste!

Be Inspired

I've just begun on this blogging journey and already I'm feeling so inspired - to share, to listen, to try, to experiment, to embrace new things. I feel excited! I hope I can inspire you to experiment in the kitchen, eat more whole foods and nourish yourself from inside out!
